IVM a cheaper fertility treatment

Researchers are constantly looking for new fertility methods that are better and cheaper. Infertility is on the rise all around the world. The most popular fertility treatment that is being recommended by doctors around the world is in vitro Fertilisation (IVF). Many childless couples have had their dream for a baby realised through IVF treatment. The IVF procedure does not guarantee a first time success and some couple end up spending a lot a money on repeated IVF procedures. Many couples have seen success in subsequent IVF attempts and hence continue to try. However, an alternate fertility treatment with equal or better success rate is always welcome.

Recently scientists in Belgium and Australia have introduced In Vitro Maturation. IVM is a technique that operates on similar lines to IVF but has a few advantages over it in certain conditions. IVM also helps to eliminate some risks associated with IVF such as ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome (OHSS). This is a condition caused when women take the drugs prescribed for stimulating the ovaries and maturing the eggs for the IVF procedure.

Advantages of IVM (In Vitro Maturation)

The IVM procedure is less invasive than the IVF procedure. The patient does not have to take strong medication to mature the eggs. In the IVM treatment the immature eggs are extracted from the patient’s ovaries. These eggs are matured in an incubator. It usually takes 1-2 days to mature the eggs and have the ready for fertilisation in the lab.

The IVM treatment is a whole lot cheaper as compared to IVF. Couples can get IVM treatment for almost half the cost of IVF. The gonadotropin injections administered to IVF patient to mature the eggs in the ovaries is quite expensive. Not having to take these injections helps to reduce cost of the fertility treatment to quite an extent. IVF entails a number a treatment steps which add to the cost. Many of these are not required for IVM and hence the cost factor is reduced considerably.

IVM recommendations

IVM is generally not recommended for all women but specifically for a particular category for women. Women who suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and those who are at high risk for ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome (OHSS) are advised IVM. Women with PCOS have a problem with the maturation of eggs in their ovaries. They can now have their immature eggs extracted and matured in the lab. OHSS susceptible patients are relieved from the having to take drugs to mature the eggs in their ovaries and put their health at risk.

Male infertility

Conditions where the couple is facing fertility issues due to the male partner’s infertility only, find that doctors may recommend IVM instead of IVF. The IVM procedure reduces the medication and treatment that the female partner is subjected to.

IVF has become the most common fertility treatment world over. Most infertile couples opt for IVF when they have no other option for a baby of their own. The growing popularity of IVF and the success stories drive couples to opt for the tried and tested fertility treatment. IVM with all its benefits will take a while before it becomes known and doctors begin to recommend it.
